Community Benefit Program

Defining our Community's Health Needs

As part of Augusta Health's commitment to the community, we coordinate—with the help and input of hundreds of organizations, agencies and individuals from throughout Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro—regular and comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Our first assessment was in 2009, and our most recent research was conducted in 2012.

Our current CHNA identifies the following as our community's top health issues:

Chronic Disease Management

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease

Health Behaviors and Community Health Education

  • Personal responsibility for lifestyle choices
  • Increased health education and programming for diabetes, obesity and wellness

Access and Affordability

  • Access to primary care providers
  • Affordable health insurance
  • Overuse of Emergency Department

Behavioral Health

  • Integration of mental health services and primary care
  • Depression
  • Teen Suicide
  • Substance Abuse
  • Access to mental health and substance abuse treatment services

Socioeconomic Factors

  • Low income poverty in Staunton and Waynesboro
  • Low educational attainment
