Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) allows a physician to take computed tomography (CT) images of the patient prior to treatment in order to verify exact placement of the tumor.

Tumors can shift due to breathing, heartbeats, gastrointestinal changes or other activities—making it imperative to capture the exact location of the tumor right before treatment. Using the CT scans, the computer will generate a 3D image of the tumor, including small contours, and its placement within the body. This imaging prior to treatment allows physicians to move the patient for maximum treatment and change the treatment plan, if need be.
