Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a radiation technique offered at Augusta Health, which uses multiple radiation beams, with adjustable on/off and intensity levels.

How IMRT Works

IMRT allows doctors to vary or 'modulate' the intensity of treatment to different areas, using a 3D computer controlled system. This variance gives doctors greater control over the beams to maximize treatment outcomes. Unlike standard radiation therapy, IMRT uses multiple beams and 'leaves', which can block and allow the beams to hit or miss certain areas of the tumor and surrounding tissues.
