What You’ll Do:

Mammographers specialize in breast imaging, performing exams that range from routine screenings to advanced procedures such as breast ultrasounds, contrast-enhanced mammograms, and biopsies. They play an essential role in the early detection and treatment of breast disease, working closely with patients to provide both accuracy and compassionate care.

Qualifications:

  • AART certification in Radiology (required).
  • AART certification in Mammography (preferred).
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Virigina state license (preferred)
  • Some Mammographers pursue additional training in Breast Ultrasound to expand their expertise.

Career Path:

Most Mammographers begin in X-ray and transition into breast imaging through on-the-job training in Augusta Health’s Breast Center. Growth opportunities include progressing from screenings to supporting complex biopsy procedures, expanding into Breast Ultrasound, and advancing into roles such as navigator, lead technologist, section supervisor, manager, or quality improvement specialist.
